Snowflake (1964–2003) was the only known albino gorilla in the world to date. Snowflake lived at the Barcelona Zoo in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, from 1966 until his death in 2003.
Snowflake was captured in the Río Muni region of Spanish Guinea on October 1, 1966, by a farmer named Benito Mañé. Initially, Snowflake was named Nfumu Ngui in the Fang language (“white gorilla”). After being moved to the zoo, he was nicknamed Floquet de Neu (“little snowflake”).
Like other albino animals, Snowflake had poor eyesight. Genetic research on Snowflake revealed that his parents shared 12% of their DNA due to inbreeding; they were uncle and niece.
