When giving birth, Ms. Cypres Salon, in the Philippines, was extremely worried when she did not hear her daughter cry. However, that is not all. 5 days later, Ms. Salon met her child and only then realized the severity of the situation.
After being born, baby Angel was urgently taken by a doctor to another hospital for treatment because of a brain herniation. This is a common disease in Southeast Asian children in which brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid and blood vessels are displaced or forced out of their normal position inside the skull.
“When I saw my baby for the first time, I cried a lot. I cried every time I saw my baby and blamed myself for giving birth to a sick baby,” Ms. Salon recounted.

Little Angel had surgery in the Philippines 4 months later when her parents raised about 125 million VND. Even though she underwent painful surgery, the “brain herniation” condition completely took over her left eye.
The disease causes difficulties in Angel’s life such as sleeping, breathing and playing. Every time I want to see something I have to lift the tumor or move it to the side.
Angel was also nicknamed “monster” by his friends. However, instead of feeling guilty or having low self-esteem, Angel was very happy with his friends’ teasing. One time a boyfriend came up and said Angel was a “monster”, he patted his shoulder and said “Hello”.

After raising nearly 200 million VND in donations, Ms. Salon and her husband Dale were introduced to a non-profit organization. Angel was examined and operated on by volunteer Australian and New Zealand doctors.
The surgery took 4 hours. Doctor Walter Flapper removed 200 grams of fluid and excess flesh from the girl’s forehead. The doctor then took bone from the hip to close the gap. Angel was able to see normally for the first time. To be more complete, Angel will have nose surgery next month.
